MOTO GP (25-26/7/2004)
Donington Park is a 3 hour drive north of London. We borrowed a friends Volvo Estate for the weekend and left early Saturday morning. The trip was an event in itself, the car had a great radio that would fall out of the dash when you started driving. It overheated, only once (this was expected), but it got us there, unlike the poor sod we saw parked on the side of the highway with his motorbike completely destroyed and on fire!
The weather was perfect on Saturday giving us a good chance to find our bearings, select a good spot to pitch the tent (which was at the end of a runway) and have a wander around the race track.
Sunday we were greeted by a passenger jet taking off which felt so close we thougt it was goinng to take the tent with it. The weather had also taken a turn for the worst. Rainy, windy and cold. Luckily, the weather and track were dry for the main race. The race was great and Valentino Rossi won in typical style on the Yamaha. The sound they make is simply incredible!
After the racing had finished for the day, we packed up the tent and then sat in the car park for (wait for it) 5 and a half hours waiting to get out of the park!! We finally got out and arrived back in London at around 2:30am Monday morning, Sam and I were booked on the Eurostar to Lille, France at 6am for the rest of my birthday week so we ended up sleeping for most of that journey!
Our thanks to the nice people at kitykity.com for allowing us the use of their photoalbum script.
